OVER VIEW OF OSHO’S UPANISHAD BOOKS
UPANISHAD IS A SANKRIT WORD. IT MEANS: SITTING AT THE FEET OF THE MASTER
The Upanishads contain pregnant Truth, their writers are anonymus. The Message was important,
not the names of these Poetic Writers.
One is his own Upanishad, the title is: THE OSHO UPANISHAD
- The Adhyatma Upanishad, in Osho’s Book ‘Finger Pointing to the Moon‘. Osho says, “They are not religious scriptures. They are poetic expressions of those who have known.”“Listening to these teachings from the master, the disciple became enlightened…” The desire for freedom (mumuksha) is central in this Upanishad, breaking the fetters of conditioning.
“What is stated in this sutra is not only difficult to understand, it may appear impossible to us. How can one become enlightened just by listening? Our logical minds cannot understand it. If listening has really happened it is not impossible, but because we do not know how to listen, it appears impossible that just by listening the disciple became enlightened.”
- The Akshya Upanishad, in Osho’s Book: ‘Vedanta, Seven steps to Samadhi’. Osho dissected this text to outline the structured stages a seeker passes through to achieve ultimate realization. “If the divine is right here and now, then what prevents us from seeing him? Why do we cling to our dream life even though it has become a misery for us?”
- The ISA Upanishad, in Osho’s Book ‘I Am That‘ Although the smallest Upanishad, Osho says: “There is no document of such luminosity, of such profoundness anywhere in the whole history of humanity.”
“The ego is a perfectionist — the desire of the ego is to be perfect — and perfection drives humanity towards insanity. Wholeness is totally different; its flavor is different. Perfection is in the future: it is a desire. Wholeness is herenow: it is a revelation.’ Osho
- The Ishavasya Upanishad. in Osho’s Book: ‘The Heartbeat of the Absolute‘.“The first thing I shall tell you about the inner meaning of this sutra is that it has declared that life is illogical. This is not said anywhere in so many words in this sutra, there is only a hint about it. Now I shall tell you what is unsaid, what is only hinted at.” Osho
- The Katha Upanishad, Kathopanishad, in Osho’s Book: The Message beyond Words
Focusing on the dialogue between the young seeker Nachiketa and Yama (the God of Death), Osho used this scripture to unpack the art of dying consciously.
- The Kaivalya Upanishad. In Osho’s Book: ‘The Flight from The Alone to The Alone’. Spoken in Hindi (and translated into English), this series targeted the difference between acquiring intellectual knowledge and hitting existential “knowing”.“This Kaivalya Upanishad is a search for this ultimate freedom, an inquiry and an exploration into the path of this inquiry. “It begins with a prayer. It will be good to understand this too, because generally, any journey should begin with effort, not with prayer; with endeavour, not with prayer. But this Upanishad begins with a prayer, and it is very meaningful.
- The Kenopanishad: The Kena Upanishad, in Osho’s book ‘The Supreme Doctrine’. Osho speaks for the first time to his Western disciples commenting this Upanishad
“People come to me and they go on asking how to dissolve the ego, and I say: “Do not try. You cannot dissolve it. Rather, put aside your knowledge and the ego will disappear.” It will disappear just like dewdrops disappear from the grass when the sun rises in the morning.” Osho
- The Mandukya Upanishad, in Osho’s book: ‘Philosophia Ultima‘. While science dissects and divides, the Upanishad is a holistic, individual approach; a unifying vision. “That’s the message of the Upanishadic philosophy, of the Mandukya Upanishad: wholeness,” says Osho as he uses its twelve verses, and one from the Ishavasya Upanishad, to illuminate the meaning of “om” and show the four stages on the path of enlightenment.
- The Nirvana Upanishad, in Osho’s Book “Behind a Thousand Names“. It is about the sannyasin who teaches that in everyone resides the Soul.
The soul that resides within every being is the swan… sannyasins teach about the soul. Through their lives, through their words, through their behavior, they teach that what resides within every being is the paramhansa, the supreme swan in everyone, the same soul resides.
- The Osho Upanishad. Osho explains that “Upanishad” means to be taken into the world of the master – and this is the work of his mystery school.
Responding to a myriad of insightful, existential and sincere questions – What is mysticism? What is fear? What is freedom? Buddha, Rinzai, Krishnamurti, Marx, Gandhi, Bodhidharma, Nietzsche, Jesus, Gurdjieff, Zarathustra – they all become grist to Osho′s mill, bringing the reader to the point of awareness where all questions begin to disappear.
Osho uses this series to declare that truth cannot be found in dead words or past traditions, but only in the immediate, living presence of the present moment.
